A recently completed Brooklyn hi-rise is the first building to house McKEON FireFighter® Model D400s

McKeon Door East worked with the architects at Beyer Blinder Belle in Manhattan to complete the first-ever installation of the FireFighter® Model D400s in Brooklyn, New York! Twenty-eight FireFighter® Model D400 fire curtain shutters and four Auto-Set® Model FSFD-IS-M-PC fire doors were installed in the hi-rise completed in March of 2022. The building combines mixed-used commercial and residential spaces in three interconnected towers with views of New York City.

CHALLENGE – Interconnecting individual towers

Rated area separation requirements in the model building code can require design teams to place fire rated walls in close proximity to each other. Often there is not sufficient space with corresponding openings in double wall configurations to accommodate back-to-back opening protectives where required.

SOLUTION – The one-of-a-kind FireFighter Model D400

Significantly reduce the size of the opening protective assembly by incorporating the McKEON Model D400. Stand alone or allowing more room for another shutter next to it, it is a one-of-a-kind innovation.

Use of the D400 can greatly reduce the overhead and side room space that would otherwise be required for conventional rolling steel fire-rated shutters. Check out this simple comparison:

The photo shown below depicts back-to-back applications where McKEON Models D400 and FSFD-IS-M-PC work together to achieve the necessary building separation.

FireFighter Model D400

The fire and smoke rated D400 has been tested and labeled to UL 10B for 90 minutes with hose stream. This textile curtain carries an “S” label under UL 1784 for smoke and draft. Unparalleled in the market, it is designed to protect openings in any wall rated up to 2 hours – including Fire Walls and Fire Barrier Walls! When deployed, the D400 curtain shutter descends as if it were a rolling steel door!
