The McKEON Model D400 Rolling Curtain Shutter debuts with perfect timing.

In the late summer of 2021 Keith Lunsford of Powers Products in Denver, Colorado was working with the design team at Interior Architects based in New York. The project was the JP Morgan Chase Denver Market Station in Colorado. With Keith’s assistance the design architect specified a McKEON Model FSFD vertical rolling steel fire door to create a code-conforming elevator lobby.

Because the elevator lobby configuration required a product that had passed a hose stream test, the UL 10B labeled FSFD was the best choice at the time. The head box size and large side guides were typical for rolling steel fire doors. The design team struggled to fit all these components into the available ceiling space and adjoining walls.

Soon after the detailing was complete, McKEON announced the rollout of the new D400 rolling curtain shutter. Keith immediately brought this new technology to the attention of the architect. He pointed out that the D400 required significantly less head room and much lower profile side guides. Also, the door assembly weighed considerably less than the previously spec’d FSFD. Unsurprisingly, the switch was made, a lobby was created and the space enhanced.

The D400 requires significantly less head room and much lower profile side guides.

There is no comparison between rolling steel and the D400 when it comes to weight and overhead and side room space requirements. But when it comes to code compliance and function, the Model D400 is a 90-minute, UL 10B and UL 1784 listed and labeled assembly. As illustrated in the above project, the D400 can be used in place of rolling steel to protect openings in any wall rated up to 2 hours – including Fire Walls and Fire Barrier Walls!
