McKEON distributors Northstar Equipment, LLC and Skold Companies collaborated on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Union renovation.

KEE Architecture in Madison, WI had previously worked with Northstar Equipment at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. At that time, the design for Sterling Hall included a McKEON Auto-Set® H200. Our horizontal acting fire door resolved a challenge in a laboratory where large pieces of experimental equipment were being hoisted between two adjoining floors.

When KEE Architecture received the commission for the renovation of the UW Milwaukee Student Union they once again turned to Northstar. Because the building was an existing space, it was necessary to consider in-place finishes, structures, and mechanicals during the pre-planning phase.

The design intent was to keep the second floor open to the large-scale entrance lobby on the campus level below. Northstar turned to McKEON to assist in solving another unique challenge. This time McKEON’s Auto-Set® Model FSFDs proved to be the ideal solution. A potential logistical problem during the installation was no obstacle for Skold Companies. Their installation team maneuvered the doors into the building and hoisted the larger 30′ wide FSFDs up to the second floor without a hitch.

The building is set to be open in early September. The university is excited to have this beautifully renovated and code-compliant space ready for students in the fall semester and beyond!
