McKEON distributor, Maxson and Associates worked alongside Lord Aeck Sargent and Holder Construction on NC State University’s Academic Success Center completed in May of 2020.

The Academic Success Center features a three-story interconnecting vertical space that is subdivided using our Auto-Set® H200 horizontal smoke and fire shutter between floors one and two. The automatic closing H200 prevents the migration of heat, smoke, or hot/toxic gases by creating vertical compartments thereby separating the vertical spaces from one another. In this application it was installed so no more than two floors connect taking advantage of the exception for smoke control systems in the atrium provisions of the IBC. As a result, the space was no longer designated as an atrium and did not require smoke evacuation systems saving the university significant construction costs!

The McKEON Auto-Set® Model FSFD and Auto-Set® CFS separate a monumental staircase adjacent to the large vertical interior, isolating its vertical shaft from the main atrium area. The vertical acting FSFD smoke and fire door is ideal in situations where fire and smoke protection is required but egress is not an issue. The CFS is a vertical acting automatic resetting smoke and fire counter shutter. Unlike conventional counter shutters it can be easily tested and reset by on-site building personnel. This project illustrates how our diverse product line can assist architects by creating code-compliant solutions that resolve common fire & life safety concerns as described in the model building code!
