Atrium Design & Wide Span Opening Protectives

At McKEON, it is our goal to forward the industry by serving as a resource for architects and designers. Perhaps one of the greatest design challenges that face architects and code enforcement personnel is to deal with the regulatory provisions of vertical spaces in all structures. Our new continuing education program, “Atrium Design & Wide Span Opening Protectives”, is a significant educational resource to understand and implement appropriate code-complying solutions by reaching the following objectives:

  • Learn the fundamental code requirements that regulate atrium and vertical-space design to include applicable referenced standards regarding appendage components
  • Examine definitive provisions of vertically designed spaces to include required separation vertically and horizontally from the building structure
  • Understand the regulatory standards governing the use and application of opening protectives in atrium and other vertical space separations
  • Explore the myths and facts behind code compliance use of fire protective curtain assemblies

This 2-hour seminar is divided into two parts — earning participants 2.0 hours of AIA Learning Unit Credit in Health, Safety and Welfare. The first hour defines the atrium and other vertical space provisions of the code. The second hour addresses these vertical spaces and their protectives — with a specific emphasis on the myths and facts regarding fire protective curtain assemblies.
